When Waste Does Not Stay Where It Is Put
What is happening in southeastern Ohio is a warning about a basic environmental reality: burying or injecting hazardous waste does not necessarily mean the waste stays in one place. In Washington County and around Marietta, concerns have been raised about fracking wastewater moving through underground formations and emerging at the surface. The wastewater can contain extremely high levels of salts, metals, hydrocarbons and naturally occurring radioactive materials.
The same broader concern deserves attention in southeast Michigan, where enormous quantities of industrial, municipal and hazardous waste are concentrated in large disposal facilities—often called mega dumps. Facilities around Wayne, Washtenaw, Oakland, Macomb and Monroe counties receive waste from Michigan and, in some cases, from outside the state.
A landfill is not an underground vault. Water moves through soil and rock. Rain and snowmelt can infiltrate waste, creating contaminated liquid called leachate. Depending on geology, groundwater gradients and the effectiveness of liners and collection systems, contaminants can migrate away from a disposal area. Potential contaminants include PFAS, solvents, petroleum compounds, metals and other industrial chemicals.
Migration can also occur through fractures, permeable geological layers, drainage pathways and groundwater connections. Once contaminants enter groundwater, they can travel beyond the physical boundaries of the facility. Contamination may also reach surface water through groundwater discharge.
That does not mean every mega dump is leaking or that every chemical found nearby came from a landfill. Determining a source requires groundwater monitoring, chemical fingerprinting, geological studies and long-term sampling.
But the Ohio situation demonstrates why simply saying “the waste is underground” is not enough. The critical question is whether the waste remains isolated over decades and generations.
Southeast Michigan has a dense combination of industry, landfills, waterways, wetlands, groundwater and residential communities. That makes independent monitoring and transparent public access to environmental data particularly important.
Waste does not stop being hazardous because we can no longer see it. The real measure of containment is whether contaminants remain contained—and whether that can be demonstrated through monitoring over time.
