The dump is lucrative. The State of Michigan Department of the Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has not been forthcoming nor clear about what they have been doing to ensure the site is safe. They failed repeatedly to contain the growth of the thing and now are allowing the site to continue to operate, currently, without a license to do so.

The US Army Corps of Engineers has gathered, and continues to collect and transport, toxic radioactive materials from the Hanford, Washington Nuclear Reservation and the Lewiston, New York Niagara Falls Storage Site to a waste dump in Van Buren Charter Township.
